If you've got an itchy rash that seems to have come from nowhere, it's likely eczema. This is a frequent complaint from patients seen at the Laser & Aesthetic Center in Odessa, TX. Dr. Robert Chappell and Dr. Ritchie Rosso have outlined some information about eczema and how it's treated at our dermatology office:

What is eczema?

Eczema is a somewhat catch-all term for itchy inflammation of the skin. It can also be referred to as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis or simply a rash. It is characterized by areas of intense itching and red, raised or flaking patches of skin on the face, arms and legs. However, it can appear anywhere on the body. Eczema is a common problem seen by your Odessa dermatologist - it affects about 35 million Americans.

What causes eczema?

In most cases, it's not known what causes eczema to develop. But by working with your Odessa dermatologist, you can identify the "triggers" that cause it to flare up. Some common triggers include: perfumes or dyes in clothing, soap or other household products; extreme heat or cold (including hot showers or the dry air associated with winter); and even times of anxiety or stress.

How can eczema be treated?

Once you and your Odessa dermatologist have narrowed down the triggers for your eczema, it's important to avoid them. For example, if your eczema is caused by heat, don't soak too long in a hot bath or spend too much time in the sun on a particularly warm day. Using a perfume-free, dye-free lotion frequently can also keep the itching at bay and give the skin time to heal. Steroids or laser treatments may be necessary if the eczema does not respond to more conservative methods first.

Don't let your eczema bother you any longer. Contact Laser & Aesthetic Center in Odessa, TX to set up an appointment with one of our dermatologists to have it treated right away.
