Self-Conscious About Spider Veins? Excel V™ Can Help

Smooth skin and a clear complexion characterize young, healthy skin, so it stands to reason that any blemishes that pop up and disrupt that harmony can make you feel less than confident in your appearance.

Spider veins are one of the most common complexion killers whether they show up on your face or your legs. For many years, the only way to get rid of these tangled webs of visible veins was to shoot them with a chemical (scleropathy) or remove them surgically.

We have a better way.

At Chappell Rosso Dermatology and Laser & Aesthetic Center in Odessa, Texas, we use the most advanced technology to clear away your spider veins without any trauma or downtime. Our board-certified dermatologists Dr. Ritchie Rosso Jr. and Dr. Robert Chappell Jr. specialize in all types of skin conditions, including vascular lesions like spider veins, and we trust the safety and effectiveness of the excel® V laser by Cutera®. Here’s how it works to eliminate your embarrassing spider veins.

Understanding spider veins

After your arteries deliver oxygen-rich blood all over your body, your veins carry it back to your heart again to repeat the process. Unfortunately, in the case of the journey from your feet to heart, your veins are literally fighting an uphill battle to get the job done.

If you’re overweight, pregnant, or you stand or sit all day, it exacerbates the problem and something’s gotta give — and it’s usually your veins. To be more specific, the tiny one-way valves inside your veins that are designed to prevent a backflow of blood on the upward journey, fail, and blood pools in one place.

Another cause is weakened vein walls that can be the result of excess pressure or wear, tear, and age. Genetics even play a role in whether or not you’ll end up with spider veins.

Whatever the cause, the veins closest to the surface of your skin fill with blood and become visible spider veins, named for their tangled, web-like appearance. Sometimes called telangiectasias, spider veins can appear on your feet, ankles, legs, or face.

Are spider veins dangerous?

No, spider veins are typically not dangerous, but they do cause a serious case of self-consciousness. Concern about your appearance is perfectly legitimate and shouldn’t be ignored — especially when a quick and safe treatment is available.

Spider veins are often accompanied or followed by their big cousin, varicose veins, which are also typically no cause for concern unless they develop into blood clots. Both spider veins and varicose veins are signs of venous insufficiency, the term we use to describe veins that struggle to keep blood flowing efficiently. In severe cases, chronic venous insufficiency can lead to blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, which require immediate medical attention.

How does excel V treat spider veins?

The excel V laser system can be calibrated to treat delicate spider veins on your legs or face, even near your eyes, or it can be switched to a different wavelength to treat deeper varicose veins.

This treatment requires no incisions and no needles, so there’s no chance of infection or scarring. We use a handheld device that we hold over the surface of your skin, so it can emit light energy through the layers.

This light energy seeks out contrasts in pigmentation, so when it meets the blue, red, or purple hues of the blood pooled in your veins, it coagulates the blood supply and destroys the faulty veins, sealing them off so they no longer transport your blood.

The good news is that your body knows exactly what to do in this situation — it redirects your blood to healthier, deeper veins, and your circulation returns to normal. Over time, the dead vein tissue gets absorbed and eliminated through your body’s waste system.

The excel V laser treatment works on spider veins, varicose veins, rosacea, hemangiomas, birthmarks and port wine stains, and venous lakes — any pigmented vascular lesions.

If you have spider veins that are making you feel self-conscious, you can be clear by summer if you start excel V treatments now. To schedule an appointment with one of our experienced dermatologists, call us or book one online today.
