3 Techniques for Clearing Away Summer Damage

You know that tanning is bad for your skin, but it isn’t just the long, lazy days sprawled out on a beach towel with all your skin exposed to intentionally soak up the sun that’s to blame, it’s also the short walks to the mailbox, the jaunt into your office, or the time spent watching your kid’s soccer game on the weekend. Every time you walk outside without some kind of sun protection, the sun damages your skin.

Over time, the damage builds up and becomes visible, but we can see it long before that. Our expert team at Chappell Rosso Dermatology and Laser & Aesthetics Center, including Dr. Ritchie Rosso Jr. and Dr. Robert Chappell Jr., can examine your skin for the early signs of sun damage and repair it before it accumulates and makes you look older than you really are.

Types of sun damage

Before we dive into your treatment options, let’s first take a look at what happens to your skin when you go outside with no protection. The sun’s rays contain two types of harmful ultraviolet light: UVA and UVB

UVA light affects all the layers of your skin and damages the fibers of collagen and elastin that give your skin structure and elasticity. It also breaks the tiny capillaries near the surface of your skin, giving you visible spider veins.

UVB light primarily attacks the outer layer of your skin, causing small patches of scaly precancerous cells to grow on the surface. You won’t see these signs the day you get home from the beach, but you may see them next year. The signs of sun damage include:

The reason we wanted to explain the photoaging concept first is to set the stage for choosing the right treatment. We offer treatments for sun damage, and some exclusively address a certain problem, and some have overlapping benefits.

When you come in for a consultation, our team conducts a thorough skin analysis and guides you through your options. Here are three popular solutions to consider.

Microdermabrasion

When the damage to your skin lives mostly near the surface, microdermabrasion is a good choice. It’s safe for all skin types, it’s painless, and it doesn’t require you to take time off for recovery.

We use an advanced technology called MegaPeel® that essentially sands your skin with tiny crystals. The process removes the outer layer of your skin and with it, the sun spots, wrinkles, minor scars, and textural problems.

FotoFacial®

We’ve established that sunlight is a powerful force that can damage your skin if you don’t diligently protect it. But the power of light can also be harnessed to repair damage. In our highly effective FotoFacial treatments, we use devices called MultiLight™ and Excel V™ that send pulses of light into the layers of your skin to tackle one of the toughest types of sun damage — those red and blue dilated or broken capillaries.

The light penetrates your skin without damaging the tissue as it targets the pigment in those tiny veins. The light energy causes the blood to coagulate, which destroys the vessels. Eventually, your body flushes them out and redirects your blood flow to healthier vessels, and your ruddy complexion is gone.

Our FotoFacial, which typically takes about five treatments to achieve optimal results, is ideal for those with rosacea, acne scars, and spider veins.

CO2 DOT therapy

Also known as dermal optical thermolysis, CO2 DOT therapy is a laser skin resurfacing technique that also promotes your body’s natural production of collagen.

This treatment is a breakthrough in laser skin resurfacing because it works differently than traditional lasers. We use a scanning device over the treatment area — which can include your neck and chest as well as your face — to create thousands of micro perforations, or “dots,” in your skin.

Then, we direct the laser into those dots, which form columns into the depths of your skin. The skin between the columns is not affected, so your skin heals much more quickly than with treatments that affect the entire surface of the skin.

Almost immediately, you’ll notice tighter, younger-looking skin, but the effects only get better as the increased collagen builds up the structure from within.

How to choose which treatment is best

Our team here at Chappell Rosso Dermatology and Laser & Aesthetics Center helps you choose the best treatment for you based on your aesthetic goals, your skin type, and the extent of your sun damage, and we customize your treatment plan, including the frequency and intensity, specifically for your unique needs.
